Madrid in the era of the Austrias
A capital between splendour and decadence
A guided tour and at the same time a picture book revisiting the era between 1500 and 1700.
Madrid as the new capital of an Empire and at the same time as a scenario of a two century
lasting drama: the creation of the Austria's Empire with Charles I and Philipp II, the
decadence of Spanish power in the seventeenth century, the religious fanatism of the
Inquisition as well as the flourishing art and literature in Spain's "Golden Age".
Plaza Mayor, Descalzas Reales, Puerta del Sol -
emblematic places where you can see the local consequences of global politics.
Our stroll deals with glamour and misery in Spain's new political centre:
foundations of convents, royal art collections, baroque pomp, but on the other
hand demographic explosion, speculation, criminality, prostitution and the every
day life of common people.
A walk to the lighter and darker sides of Madrid´s first splendorous era.
