Bullfighting - death before sunset
A popular celebration between art and controversy
Bullfighting, "los toros": an integral part of Spanish culture and identity. At the
beginning not much more than an aristocratic amusement, bull fighting was becoming more
and more popular from the eighteenth century on and the bull fighters were becoming real
heroes. Bull fighting schools and arenas were being constructed and a particular language
and symbology developed around the bull fighting world. Intellectuals and artists from Goya
to Hemingway and García Lorca were visiting the arenas and writing about their sensations.
But bullfights are in a very difficult period nowadays. Groups who try to protect the rights
of animals are demonstrating against the bloody ritual. And a lot of bullfighting fans think
that today's bullfighters are not as courageous as they were in former periods. Will a new
generation of toreros appear to start a renaissance of this ceremony? Or will decadence continue?
